Lower Beeding Lions 1 -
Roffey Robins 2
The Lion's final game of the season and the fight for the top of the table kept us all in suspense until the final whistle.
Beeding came out of the blocks flying and really put Roffey on the back foot.
The whole team played with conviction and spirit, and after pressing the opposition throughout the first half, the Lions were rewarded with an excellent goal from Chris who struck the ball over the goalie's head into the back of the net. Roffey were noticeably rattled but began to take their fair share of possession and picked up an equaliser just before half time.
In addition & just prior to half time Sam picked up a nasty knee injury, Brandon filled the void leaving Beeding stretched with no further subs available.
During the second half the two teams played competitively throughout, with Beeding having the majority of the play, and it was a cruel, late Roffey goal, just 4 minutes from time, which cost us the match.
There were stand out performances across the park for the Lions but Man of the Match went to Cameron for his dominance in the air.
Although the team were bitterly disappointed with the final result (a draw would have been fair...) they went away proud of their fantastic performance and commitment and it was clear to all that they deserve next season's B division status and will approach this having huge confidence in their abilities.
Well done to all the boys and best wishes go to Sam for a quick recovery.

Lower Beeding Lions 7 - Ockley Acorns 0 Back on a large, soft grass pitch, Beeding played well from the start with excellent performances all round.
The Lions Defence were in strong form, communicating well and covering for each other.
Mid-field won the ball and moved it forward with flair creating numerous chances for the forwards to score; Chris scored a majestic 4, Adam W and Tom showed their pin-point accuracy with 1 goal a piece coming from outside the box.
Adam B picked up a goal from a defender deflection after an impressive run and shot from Benji, and Sam thread his way through the opposition to pick up 1.
The Lions lost their shape a little in the second half and this was reflected in the score line as we only picked up one goal. It was partly due to Josh B's efforts in goal which kept our clean sheet; he made a few crucial saves and decisions which allowed us to come out 7-0 winners and which earned him Man of the Match.
Well done everyone.

Under 14's Division C - 31.03.10 Lower Beeding Lions 2 - Broadbridge Heath 0
Our mid-week match was a tough one as it was played on a cold, windy astro pitch and it took the Lions some time to get used to the surface and conditions. Not much flowing football was played from either side and we had to wait until the second half for goals to finally come.
Chris scored our two goals and Sam was Man of the Match for his second half mid-field performance.
It was not pretty but Beeding got the result they needed.

Match 1 - Lower Beeding Lions 2 - East Grinstead Meads 1
Hard work was made of this first match as it took some time for the whole of the Lions team to get into the game.
Beeding had enough chances to make the score line look more impressive but were unable to find the back of the net for some time.
East Grinstead Meads defended quite well but had few chances on goal, unfortunately scoring from one of them.
Overall it was a bit lack lustre although there were a few stand out performances; Adam Wicking earned himself Man of the Match for his tireless efforts and two goals, the second being a fantastic strike to win us the match.
Match 2 - Lower Beeding Lions 2 - East Grinstead Meads 0
With the prize of second place in the League and promotion if Beeding could win this game, the Lions worked hard, but just before half time it was still 0-0. Unfortunately, following an accidental collision, the game had to be stopped and an ambulance had to be called when one of the East Grinstead Meads player's badly injured himself, resulting in a broken collar bone.
After a twenty minute break it was difficult to carry on into the second half but the Lions finally managed to find their finishing skills and both Sam and Chris found the back of the net.
Again, there were some strong performances with both Euan and Benji earning Man of the Match for their defensive efforts.
Well done to all the boys. Special thanks to Harry for going in goal with Josh away and to Jonny re-joining the team for this crucial match.

Match 1 - Lower Beeding Lions 3 - Heron Olympic 2 Lions were privileged to be playing this crucial double header against Heron Olympic on a floodlit Worthing United pitch, the sea mist rolling in completed a tense and exciting atmospheric evening.
Lions took the early initiative scoring via Chris Keeble within the first thirty seconds and they continued to work hard to end the first half 3-0 up.
Heron, however, demonstrated why they are third place in the league behind the Lions and came out with a strong gutsy second half performance, putting a nervous looking Lions under a lot of pressure in midfield and at the back and scoring two goals in a match that could have easily gone either way.
Fortunately Beeding managed to retain their first half lead and win 3-2; the Lions goals coming from Chris Keeble 2 and Tom Price 1.
The Lions man of the match was Euan Thorpe for his strong defensive duties.
Match 2 - Lower Beeding Lions 4 - Heron Olympic 3
Following Coach Bailey's team talk, the Lions came out for their second match looking much stronger & more confident, again taking the early initiative and picking up a couple of goals early in the first half, however, Heron held their heads high & continued to press forward & battle hard scoring two goals to go in level at half time and all to play for in the second half.
Beeding pulled out their best performance in this second half, starting at last to play the level of football spectators have become used to during the season and using the width of the huge pitch.
The Lions went ahead but Heron quickly responded to make it 3-3
Beeding fought hard and it was a tense and exciting last few minutes until the Lions picked up a fourth to win the match 4-3 & collect six extremely valuable points.
Worthy man of the match in the second game went to Chris Keeble for his tireless efforts and 5 fantastic goals across the two matches.
Captain Adam Wicking added his name to the score sheet (1).

Under 14's Division C - 13.03.10 Lower Beeding Lions 8 - Ashington Cougars (U13s)1
Goal scorers - Adam B , Adam W, Benji, Euan, Lucas, Max, Sam & an own goal.
A ten man Lions U14's played a friendly against an A division U13 side Ashington Cougars.
The Lions strength emerged early on in the game and they settled very quickly, dominating in all positions across the pitch and for the first 15 minutes the ball didn't leave the Cougars half.
The opposition allowed the Lions to play some good technical football with some lovely touches & movement on show, thus Beeding's goals came thick & fast and more importantly from across all positions, demonstrating just how versatile the team has become.
At half time they were leading 6-0.
The second half saw the Lions make some changes with keeper Josh Bailey swapping the keepers gloves with Adam Wicking for the centre midfield role.
Cougars in turn emerged with confidence, playing a more attacking game and their first half fears diminished, eventually picking up a goal.
A trip in the Lions box gave Cougars a penalty, however keeper Adam W. pulled off a save and although Beeding took their foot off the pedal for a while, the Lions responded with two more goals to complete this friendly with a strong 8-1 win.
Lions Man of the Match went to Benji Reeves for his effort & commitment throughout the game. Report by Jill Reeves Under 14's Division C - 06.03.10
Lower Beeding Lions 9 - Dorking Saints Pumas 3
Lower Beeding were slow off the mark and allowed Dorking to take control of the first 20 mins, however it was the Lions who opened the scoring via a Chris Keeble goal.
Dorking quickly responded and for a while it was evenly matched.
Beeding managed to nudge ahead to finish the first half 4-2 up.
Dorking started the second half well but it was Beeding who snapped up two more goals and at this point the opposition began to fall away.
Despite not playing their best football, the Lions put further pressure on Dorking by scoring 3 more goals in the last few minutes of the game.
Even though the opposition scored a consolation goal, the final result was a convincing 9-3 win to Beeding.
Keeper Josh again showed a safe pair of hands, the back four played well constraining the Dorking front players, Midfield worked hard, albeit having some holes in the middle of the park at times and the strikers pressed well all match, especially Chris who scored a hat trick and picked up Man of the Match.
The team scored some well worked goals from all positions.
Goal scorers were: Chris Keeble 3, Brandon Weston 2, Euan Thorpe 2, Lucas Percy 1, Adam Bellchambers 1

Lower Beeding Lions 5 - Maidenbower 2
Once again Beeding U14s were forced to play this home fixture away due to pitch availability. However, this did not deter them starting with confidence and purpose as they quickly put their stamp on a game against an up and coming Maidenbower side that had only been beaten once in the last ten outings.
Beeding did everything that coach Bailey had asked prior to the game, not allowing Maidenbower to settle on the ball, quickly closing them down, keeping the ball on the ground and playing some good possession football. This strong attacking, passing game enabled Beeding to go one up in the first ten minutes via Chris Keeble.
Maidenbower quickly responded to level the score. Beeding were seen to be working set pieces very well and their second came from a well placed corner ball and well taken Adam Wicking header.
During the second half Beeding had several more chances, a goal mouth scramble led to a cool tap in from Brandon and Beeding's third, the fourth goal again coming from Chris. Beeding were clearly on top, which stemmed from their hard work and this gutsy and quality attitude made a good Maidenbower side look very ordinary on the day.
Some excellent defensive work and build up play led to balls being carefully manoeuvered from the back through to midfield and on to the forwards. Maidenbower also working hard, continued the fight and picked up a second goal in the last fifteen minutes but Beeding's quality overpowered them and their fifth came again courtesy of Chris Keeble who chipped the keeper in another well taken goal & his hat trick.
This was quite easily Beeding's best performance of the season - it was a superb all round effort from across the whole team from the keeper, throughout defence, midfield and attack; everybody knew their job on the day and carried it out to the full.
Very worthy man of the match was captain Adam Wicking who led from the front! Report by Jill Reeves Under 14's Division C - 13.02.10
Lower Beeding Lions 4 - Henfield 5
Lower Beeding were forced to play this home fixture away due to pitch unavailability, got off to a nervous start. In contrast, Henfield started quickly, being first to every ball, playing good attacking football, putting Beeding under pressure and thus Beeding conceded an early goal.
However the game changed for the better with Beeding creating chances and converting three of them in the first half, Chris taking on the keeper & picking up the first, Euan with a speculative high lob shot from just outside the box scoring the second and Lucas making good from a goal mouth scramble following a corner to go in 3-1 up at half time.
It has to be said this was somewhat against the run of play and Henfield came storming out after the break. Once again Beeding worked hard, creating several chances but failed to convert these opportunities.
Henfield exploited some weaknesses in the Beeding midfield / defence and before long were just a goal behind. Beeding picked up a fourth goal courtesy of Lucas and with 12 minutes to play were leading 4-3.
In order to retain the lead coach Bailey moved Cameron and then Max back in front of the defence, however during the last 10 minutes Henfield looked like they wanted it more and made several penetrating runs, picking up a fourth goal & then a final winner in the last two minutes leaving Beeding no time to recover.
The above said, there were some stand out performances for Beeding with Josh Bailey showing confidence & bravery between the sticks and Benji Reeves for his consistent assertive defensive duties - joint men of the match this week.

Lions passing and pressure
tells in spades on big pitch
Lower Beeding Lions 6 - Forest Row 0
Team: Comber, Hayter, Davies, Heath, Thurgar (Eglinton ), Bayne, Baeza-Wigzell , Dollner, Rogers, Bucher (Westray), Spry
Goals : Spry (17), Davies (25, 44, 52, 56), Baeza-Wigzell (49)
On a very big pitch, at the kind invitation of Worthing United, the Lions played the last league game of the season.
Given the dreadful weather of December and January, the full programme would never have been completed but for the support of Worthing, for which we are grateful. The result puts pressure on the other two top teams to win their games in hand. Whether the Lions get promoted could all depend on Upper Beeding taking points off Greenway! The big pitch always meant that the Lions would be able to get their passing game going. The question was, would they be able to keep pressing Forest Row throughout the game on such a pitch? The answer turned out to be a resounding YES.
From start to finish the Lions pressed. Forest Row were never given any time on the ball, without a Lion hounding and snapping at them. Indeed, in the whole of the first half Forest only got into the Lions' half three times! Bayne, Heath, Thurgar and Baeza-Wigzell were prodigious in their running, hustling and tackling. The passing too was excellent quick and imaginative, notably from Bayne, Rogers and Davies.
It took a while for the goals to come. Boucher had several early chances. Heath and Spry also failed to bury good ones. A succession of six corners failed to yield anything, partly due to the size of the pitch.
The first goal came as a Heath corner was defended out to Rogers in right midfield. He rounded a Forest player and delivered a good deep cross into the box. Spry was the fastest onto the ball, scoring cleanly.
The Lions sat back for a brief period after the goal, but Hayter and Dollner were strong in dealing with any threat, before Bayne lifted the team again with a succession of midfield tackles, interceptions and passes.
The next goal came following Heath bravely challenging the keeper for a high ball into the box. The keeper punched the ball away to Davies in the right-back position. He immediately returned the ball high and over the keeper, into the net.
Early in the second half, Heath and then Spry made good inroads up the wing. The Lions' constant and crisp passing, forcing Forest to chase the ball, was wearing out Forest energy reserves. The Lions as a whole, but Bayne in particular, seemed to still have ample energy to burn. Sensing the chance to kill the game off, the coaches pushed Davies up front to use his strength and his nous to dominate a tiring Forest defence. The tactic worked in spades!
First it was Baeza-Wigzell forcing his way up the right to deliver a cross for Davies to finish calmly. Then Spry put Baeza-Wigzell through, to poke the ball over the line. Then Rogers and Heath combined well on the right to get the ball into the box, where Davies controlled, turned and finished. The final goal came in a bit of a goalmouth scramble, with Davies remaining calm and controlling the ball, to score precisely.
Forest did make more inroads into the lions half in the second half, but the defenders were usually able to cope and, when they weren't, Comber showed admirable alertness, speed and decision-making to keep his box clear.
A towering captain's performance by Bayne would have earned man-of-the-match in most other games. But who could deny it to the four-goal-scorer, so it went to Davies.

Under 12's Division B - 27.03.10 Lions dispel Panther bogey to consolidate promotion place
Lower Beeding Lions 2 - St Pauls Panthers 0
Team: Comber, Kennell (Hayter), Heath, Thurgar, Bayne, Baeza-Wigzell , Dollner, Rogers, Bucher (Westray), Spry (Eglinton), Williams
Goals: Williams (40,53)
From under 9's onwards, St Pauls Panthers have been a bogey side for this Lions squad. They won the Lower Beeding tournaments, and also often won narrow victories over the Lions without outplaying them. Today that bogey was dispelled!
On a small pitch the coaches played a very effective 4-3-3 formation, with Rogers pushed up as a third striker to play wide and deliver a good supply of crosses. This he did well, particularly in the first half. Others in the Lions team were applying good pressure on the ball, notably Bayne, a terrier in midfield, ably abetted by Spry and Baeza-Wigzell. At the back, Dollner and Thurgar were giving nothing away, and Heath slotted in to right-back as if he was born to play there.
Most of the play was in the Panther half, but they have good pace in their side and it was the Panthers who came close to scoring first. A tremendous cross was just too high for an unmarked Panther striker, despite a prodigious leap.
But the Lions simply regrouped, closed the Panthers down and gave them no time on the ball to play. The tactic of pushing Rogers up and wide meant there was always an outlet for the Lion in possession (so long as they remembered to use it). Heath delivered a number of good forward passes, and then the initiative switched to the other full-back as Thurgar delivered a very challenging cross-cum-shot that had the Panthers gasping in relief as it went out. Shortly after that he won the ball deep, skipped round two Panthers and delivered a great pass to Bucher. On another day Bucher would surely have scored.
The Lions set about the second half demonstrating that they were going to continue stopping the Panthers from playing. Dollner, Heath and Baeza-Wigzell put in strong tackles. It was good to see some great headers by Kennell and by Baeza-Wigzell. Up front, however, the fact that Bucher and Williams had not played together for some time showed, as they too often made the same run, or played too close to each other.
The Lions were building the pressure however: Heath had a powerful shot saved, Spry narrowly missed from a Rogers' corner. The first goal came as the Panthers defended a corner well, the ball coming out to Baeza-Wigzell, who returned it to the danger area. Williams was the first to react, controlling the ball, turning on a six-pence, and drilling it into the net.
Whether it was because the Panthers raised their game, or because the away-side relaxed, after the goal the Lions no longer seemed to be in control. Dollner was the only one still closing down, still tackling. Comber without much to do until now had to prove his alertness, and use his area well to snuff out danger.
This period of play was ended when Williams scored well from an excellent Heath through-ball.
A tremendous tackle and pass from Dollner set up Williams nicely for his hattrick. Unfortunately he pulled the ball wide. Westray too was trying hard to get onto the scoresheet, first with a header and then with a shot parried by the goalie into the path of an onrushing Eglinton, whose shot the keeper also saved.
Nine points in the last three matches mean that the Lions have a very real chance of winning promotion to the A league.

Under 12's Division B - 20.03.10 Plate Semi-Final Lower Beeding Lions 3 - Maidenbower Utd 1
A dull, damp and yet pleasantly mild morning greeted boys, parents and coaches alike to the Mecca of football at Leechpond Hill where conditions were good for football.
Parking was difficult resulting in the late arrival of some to the ground. This was in part due to the poor parking of the Bendy Bus that the visitors were using to transport their vast entourage of coaching staff.
As always, the club extends its thanks to those who made the effort to arrive on time to help set-up.
The home team, anxious to bounce back from the disappointment of the previous week looked to be favourites for the prestigious Plate in this thrilling semi-final clash. Both Arthur and Luke were unavailable but otherwise the coaches had a fit squad from which to select.
Lions chose a strategic 4-4-2 formation starting line up from a squad of 12. The coaches fielded; George, Nathan, Josh, Els, JT, Danny BW, Nick, Sam, Dylan, Harry and Dan B. James Westray was available on the bench if required.
Visiting coaching staff seemed to outnumber players and some in the crowd wondered whether Maidenbower would be fielding a more mature squad. It would later transpire that this indeed was the case.
Lions started brightly enough and enjoyed the majority of possession.
On 4 minutes, Danny BW received the ball on the edge of the visitors area and despite the ball being slightly stuck under his feet, was able to generate the power to slot the ball away 1-0.
Following the restart, another Lions attack resulted in the visiting Linesman finding some time to explain the off-side rule to the families of the Lions Coaches for which they were obviously grateful.
Some of the Lions passing was crisp and accurate and they enjoyed the majority of possession.
Nick again ran the midfield with military precision, supported by a strong, focussed Danny BW.
The visitors fashioned few attacks and some tweaks by the Lions Coaches ensured the defence remained effective and any danger neutralised.
As the first half progressed, Lions attacks became less frequent both Dan and Harry had chances with the best coming as Dan picked the ball up on the half way line but his shot was easily saved at the near post.
Significant talent on the left of the field was virtually overlooked as Lions failed to use the width. As the first half drew to a close it was clear that this wasn't the one sided affair that some had predicted.
The visitors started the second half the brighter and the Lions defence, brilliantly marshalled by Els and Nathan were alert and dealt with all that was thrown their way.
Some excellent distribution fashioned some half chances but the early part of the half belonged to Maidenbower who looked the more threatening.
The goal came on 40 minutes, well struck from 25 yards giving George The Fish no chance. 1-1.
The equaliser had a dramatic effect and the Home side began to play as we know they can.
Nick, in an advanced position collected the ball on the edge of the enemy box and struck it low into the corner. 2-1. Two minutes later, Dylan and Harry combined brilliantly to allow Harry to collect the perfectly weighted pass, control with his first touch, score with his second. 3-1.
Whilst many sides would have resigned themselves to defeat, Maidenbower rallied and Nathan was forced to make a goal line clearance, without using his hands.
Lions found their form and used the large pitch to their advantage, now able to use the width on both sides and JT finally was able to deliver the balls we know he is capable of. Dan B moved briefly onto the left flank to allow Dylan and Harry to combine up front, before making way for James W.
The closing minute saw Dylan denied a well deserved goal by the upright.
The game ended 3-1 and will ensure the Lions have a place in the final. It was a great performance by the whole team but a particular mention goes to Danny BW who as always, showed strength, commitment and effort.

LIONS OUT MUSCLED IN TIGHT DOUBLE -HEADER
Match 1 - Lower Beeding Lions 0 - Greenway 0
Team - Comber, Hayter (Kennell), Davies , Thurgar ( Eglinton ), Bayne, Baeza-Wigzell , Dollner, Rogers, Bucher, Spry, Heath
The Lions started the match where they left off last week. Unfortunately Greenway are a much stronger team than was faced in the Plate. Their players are tough and there is good height in the team.
Nevertheless, with Comber in fine form, quick to come out and use his area to snuff out danger, Greenway rarely looked like scoring. Bucher was lively up front, showing some good touches and lay-offs. Bayne put in a heavy shift in midfield, battling and passing.
Led by Dollner, the back four were quick to snap into their tackles. Davies was using the ball well, always seeming to find time to deliver a good pass. Heath had two shots on goal. For the second one, however, he would have done better to pass the ball left to Bucher who was unmarked. Thurgar delivered a wonderful cross straight to Bucher's head, but his effort was defended out to Baeza-Wigzell, whose shot went over.
Thurgar did even better with the next move. Rogers laid a corner short to him and Thurgar delivered a searching cross into the heart of the penalty area. Heath's shot was parried to Hayter, whose shot was saved. On another day the move would have ended in the goal that Thurgar's cross deserved.
Match 2 - Lower Beeding Lions 1 - Greenway 2
Goals - Luke Davies (19)
Greenway (15,26)
The Lions started brightly with Baeza-Wigzell getting in a good shot. Then Bayne won the ball in midfield, passed swiftly to Baeza-Wigzell, who moved the ball wide to Rogers, who crossed to Spry. Spry needed to hit it first time, but took a touch and was then surrounded by defenders.
Greenway, however, were winning more and more of the ball. When the Lions did have possession, the Greenway fullbacks were very fast and the centre-backs very tall and behind them was an agile keeper. Nevertheless the match was as tight as the previous one, with two good sides cancelling each other out.
Then came a moment of bad luck! The Greenway right-winger rounded a Thurgar challenge and unleashed a cross that Bayne's attempted interception diverted into the net.
Funnily enough, the goal seemed to reinvigorate the Lions and it didn't take them long to equalise. Davies won the ball near the half-way line, passed forward to Rogers in space, and then followed the move, by running into the penalty are to meet Rogers' cross with a powerful strike.
This was followed by by a very similar move. This time Rogers' cross cried out for a Bucher header. Unfortunately the striker attempted to use his feet instead, and the chance was gone.
In both matches the Lions had a number of corners, most of which they failed to use well, even sending the ball behind the goal three times. The match was settled by Greenway using one of their fewer corners very well. An excellent delivery met a powerful and determined header. Simple goal! Unstoppable goal!

Under 12's Division B - 06.03.10 'HEATH TOO HOT FOR CRAWLEY TO HANDLE!'
Lower Beeding Lions 5 - Crawley United 0
Team: Comber, Hayter (Eglinton), Davies (Kennell) , Thurgar, Bayne, Baeza-Wigzell , Dollner, Rogers, Bucher, Spry, Heath
Goals : Heath (16,20,53,59), Thurgar (37)
The Lions faced Crawley United for this Quarter-final game in the Plate competition. Although Crawley are struggling in the league, they are in the A league!
The away side started brightly, as the Lions initially looked hesitant. But the pressure on the Lions was relieved by robust defending from Hayter, midfield energy from Bayne and some clever passing and subtle flicks from Spry.
The home side started to grow in confidence and, as they did so, gave Crawley less and less time on the ball. For the rest of the match, every time a Crawley player was in possession, the Lions hunted him down. On a big pitch, this tremendous display of determination and energy started with Heath, up front, and went all the way through the team to Dollner at the back. The larger pitch, too, was allowing the Lions' passing game to flourish. Bucher had a couple of chances to open the scoring, the second coming courtesy of a snatched Spry cross, using the outside of his foot. Heath then had a goal disallowed for off-side, following another Spry cross.
Bayne and Baeza-Wigzell were now bossing midfield and the play was all in the Crawley half. As Bucher and Heath combined to create havoc in the penalty area, Heath stabbed home the first goal.
Dollner should have scored with a free kick which had plenty of power, but was not on-target.
A rare Crawley attack was cleared by Hayter over the top. Heath was fastest onto the loose ball, took a touch and lobbed the keeper for goal number two.
Unlike the Lions, Crawley were not closing the ball down with anything like the necessary urgency. Thurgar, finding the ball deep on the left, had all the time he needed to control and then pick his shot, tremendously, into the near top corner of the net.
Then it was Heath and Rogers combining to put Bucher through to force a save. Heath followed this with a thrilling run, forcing yet another save. A Rogers corner saw Heath cleverly trying a glancing header. One sensed another goal was on the way. It came, inevitably, from Heath as he seized upon a loose ball to calmly slot it beyond the hapless Crawley goalie.
The whole of the Lions team continued to show their commitment and enthusiasm. Late in the game three Crawley players carved an opening, but before they could make anything of it, no less than seven Lions were back: some hustling, some tackling, some covering. On a large pitch, and late in the game, this was impressive stuff.
The move that led to the final goal saw excellent ball control by Rogers as he moved into the area to shoot. The keeper parried, but that boy Heath was there to put away the rebound.
Despite scoring four goals and the team being 5-0 up, there was no relaxing by Heath. From the restart, as for all the previous restarts, he speedily put pressure on the Crawley player in possession. Harry earnt a well deserved Man of the Match for his performance.

Under 12's Division B - 20.02.10
Due to all the postponed matches this game became a double-header, with each half counted as a separate match.
First match: Lower Beeding Lions 2 - Upper Beeding 0
Team: Hayter, Eglinton , Kennell, Thurgar, Westray, Baeza-Wigzell , Dollner, Rogers, Bucher, Spry, Heath
Goals : Heath (16), Dollner (25) Due to traffic problems following an accident on the road, the Lions started with 10 players. Notwithstanding this disadvantage the Lions applied early pressure on Upper Beeding.
Dollner, Thurgar, Baeza-Wigzell, Rogers and Spry were quick to close the ball down, and so firm in the tackle that the hosts barely got out of their own half for the first ten minutes, when Westray arrived to reinforce the position. Soon after his arrival Eglinton and Thurgar combined to win the ball on the left. The latter quickly released the ball to Heath, who showed wonderful balance to turn and score. Bucher should have doubled the score. He was alert to run onto a back header by an Upper Beeding centre-back, but his shot was weak.
Alongside Bucher up front was new signing Heath. He battled with game determination against much bigger opponents who had the benefit of a lenient referee.
The back four, bolstered by Westray, did well in restricting anything at all from troubling the stand-in goalie, Hayter. Baeza-Wigzell, Rogers and Spry were in control of the midfield. From time to time they even tried to get their passing going, but the long grass made this impossible.
Dollner's power in the free kicks seems to be a developing weapon for the Lions. He put one over the top, and hit the wall with a second, but better was to come. Eglinton, enjoying the freedom of a rare outing on the left-wing, tried a dribble, was fouled, and Dollner scored a fantastic goal from the free kick.
Second match: Lower Beeding Lions 1 - Upper Beeding 3
Goals : Heath (20)
Upper Beeding: (7), (16), (28)
Upper Beeding were clearly stung by the result and by their poor performance in the first match. They came out full of the determination and commitment that had been lacking. The Lions' midfield were so unprepared for this, that they ceded control. Even worse, the Lions' defenders lost focus and discipline, giving away a soft early goal. They also showed their old frailty of being unwilling to head the ball, bringing pressure onto themselves.
The Lions are good enough to turn this around and they were unfortunate not to score from one of several shots in a goalmouth scramble, and were later denied by some bold and nimble goalkeeping in another goalmouth scramble. An excellent Rogers corner led to more scuffed chances, but none found their way into the net.
In contrast, when an Upper Beeding forced a goal mouth scramble they managed to put the ball away to make the score 2-0.
The coaches decided to add to the power in midfield, where the game was being lost. They moved Thurgar up, and pulled Eglinton back to the left-back position. This paid an almost immediate dividend as Thurgar won the ball on the left and lifted it into the penalty area, for Heath to divert into the goal.
More chances to score came and went yet another goal mouth scramble, and then a very decent penalty shout. Then Thurgar was fouled as he tried to burst into the box. The referee played an advantage and the move petered out. With Dollner's ability at free kicks, the Lions would have preferred not to have the advantage.
Apart from Dollner and Thurgar, the Lions were still playing as if they were a different team to the one seen earlier. They failed to mark properly from a throw-in and were lucky to see Upper Beeding put the free shot over the top.
As the match was coming to a close, an Upper Beeding corner was well delivered, meeting a determined head to complete a defeat that looked highly unlikely half an hour earlier.

Lower Beeding Lions 3 - Roffey Robbins Athletic 1
A clear, crisp and bitingly cold morning greeted boys, parents and coaches alike to the Cowfold Super Little' Drome where conditions were good for football. Many in the crowd sought immediate refuge in hot coffee, bacon bagels and eventually, bacon sandwiches once the appropriate WAG notification was received.
The home team, buoyant from a fine performance the previous week were clearly the favourites despite missing some key personnel. George, Nick and Arthur all unavailable meant that Lions would be under strength but no problem there boys....
Lions chose a strategic 4-4-2 formation starting line up from a squad of 12. The coaches fielded; Luke, Nathan, Josh, Els, JT, Danny BW, Sam, Dylan, Harry, James Williams and Dan B. James Westray ready from the bench as supersub.
Many in the crowd were expecting a very one sided affair and based on form and the league table, that was an understandable view. What transpired was far from most expectations and is valuable lesson for the Lions and great credit to their visitors, Roffey Robbins Athletic.
A scrappy first half ensued, neither team creating any opportunity worthy of discussion. Whilst The Lions enjoyed the majority of possession, they were unable to create anything as a result first touch, passing, creativity and energy all sadly lacking. Unforgivable simple errors such as foul throws constantly gave away possession as The Lions made their task harder and harder. Roffey, sniffing blood, raised their game and a number of attacks meant the Lions defence had to be alert. These were few and far between but Luke and his defence were alert and ensured the door remained closed. Josh made some vital clearances and Danny BW bursting from midfield had a one of the few shots on goal
That was it
. The first half over and if anyone had contemplated dozing off, the threat of frozen lips stuck to Cowfold turf was enough to maintain interest. Space is also of a premium so standing only is permitted.
The second half started equally dully, little ground conceded by either team. The pitch limited the Lions width and the loss of Nicks creative and imaginative play making in the middle of the park meant that the home side were often lacking flair and innovation. However, on 45 minutes, clever interplay released Sam who was able to slot the ball away 1-0.
The celebrations were short lived and an attack from the visitors resulted in a penalty that was coolly put away giving the Luke no chance. 1-1. This could have been a turning point in the game and despite the home sides possession, no-one would have had argued if the underdogs had gone on to win. Changes in formation by the coaches made an immediate impact. Dan B found a loose ball and was able to convert the half volley from the edge of the box. 2-1. The Home side seemed then to find their form and shortly after, Harry was able to capitalise on a defensive error for 3-1.
There was little to choose between the two teams on the day and credit to the Robins for putting up such a battle. The Lions however will need to improve greatly and perform to the required standard if they are to stand any chance of promotion.

Under 12's Division B - 06.02.10
Lower Beeding Lions 2 - Broadbridge Heath 0
There was significant concern in the Lions camp that the game with the current league leaders would not go ahead given the vast number of fixtures previously postponed.
The boys were ready for action and expectations were high, so with the news that local councilors had been far too busy validating expense claims to concern themselves with football, the mood was buoyant.
A clear, crisp morning greeted boys, parents and coaches alike to the Broadbrige Heath Arena where conditions were good for football. Many in the crowd expressed concern about the whereabouts of the FA official shortly before the teams were due to do battle.
Lions chose a strategic 4-4-2 formation starting line up from a squad of 13. The coaches fielded; George 'The Fish' Comber, Nathan, Luke, Josh, Els, Nick, Danny BW, Sam, Dylan, James 'Will The Thrill' Williams and Dan B. A difficult starting 11 to choose, from an exceptional team meant that subs included JT, and Harry H. Arthur bravely made himself available despite a back injury but had to stand down from selection at the last minute - all at the club wish him a speedy recovery.
Kick off was prompt at 9.30 and as the official got proceedings underway, many in the crowd wondered how he hadn't been spotted earlier. Lions started brightly with some innovative passing and movement and The Heath seemed initially overwhelmed by the fluidity and skill of the visitors. The early pressure on the home side resulted in the ball falling to James who coolly took the ball on the half volley from 30 yards. Few in the crowd doubted where the ball would rest and even the ref was taking giant strides back toward the centre circle before the ball nestled in the back of the net 1-0
It was only a few minutes before further Lions pressure saw Dan B run on goal and despite some heroic Heath defending, Dan was able to poke home for 2-0! The once noisy Heath camp was silenced, disbelief perhaps that a spanking was on the cards. If the Lions expected an easy ride they were to be disappointed as the home team rallied as again the coaches found their voices. Sustained pressure was absorbed by the Lions defence, Luke, Josh and Nathan resolute in their duties, Els as always, the reassuring rock, clearing danger from the lair that belonged to 'The Fish'. Then cruelly, a penalty to the home team following desperate defending, meant the visitors cushion of safety was in danger at a critical stage of the game. Striker and keeper alone, the crowd silenced, and then the adulation of a world class save meant the Lions remained the dominant force. Further pressure ensued from the home side but the lions were able to go into the break without conceding.
It was a game of two halves. Both teams displayed some exceptional football skills and the Lions central midfield of Danny BW and Nick provided a solid backbone to a team that began to again grow in confidence. Sam 'Dodge' Rogers and Dylan provided the width that tested and stretched the home sides defence although at times, the service generally to the 2 strikers was lacking, the final pass not always of the necessary quality. Trickery from Dan B wowed some in the crowed although many were more impressed as to how he managed not to trip himself up.
A series of corners and sustained pressured from the home team saw George and his defence called into action and this period saw The Fish at his best, a fantastic performance. Dan B and Nathan made way for Harry and JT who both put in sterling performances. Of note was a JT 40 yard cross field pass from that silky left foot to Sam, who narrowly failed to make a connection. Harry was superb in a role that he is not used to and caused problems for the home defence.
A thrilling game, played in great spirit by both teams.

It was obvious from the moment we arrived that there was a hope and possibly even an expectation of revenge in the air. PG wanted revenge for the corresponding fixture earlier in the season which Lions had won 9-0. This was a very different PG side though, with players added and an impressive run of form behind them, they were really up for this match.
PG started well and were rewarded with early possession through their game plan of not allowing Lions to settle on the ball. They forced a couple of early corners and, with tall players, were able to trouble Lions through high balls into the box. But, and almost against the run of play, it was Lions who scored first from a corner of their own. Ben fired the corner along the ground reaching Marcus on the edge of the area who shot high into the net to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
Lions went close again with a snap reaction volley from Adam which was well saved and also forced another couple of corners but were unable to create chances from them.
From a PG corner a long range shot was going harmlessly wide before Charlie stopped it from going off but in doing so could only find a PG attacker who shot from wide to level the match.
By now the match was a tight as the score suggests and although Lions were pushing to regain the lead PG remained dangerous from breakaways and a constant threat at corners. Half time came and once again Coach Craig was going to have to earn his money as the opposition kindly offered Orange segments for the Lions to devour.
One or both of these must have worked as soon after the re-start Adam, running down the right wing, crossed to find Rob who took a touch and then shot to make the score 2-1. Not long afterwards Ben played a great through ball to Adam who finished well, 3-1.
By now Lions were really in their stride, and Adam poached another goal to make the score 4-1.
PG were starting to lose their spirit now but Lions were in no mood to let up. Rob in midfield found Charlie on the right and with great vision crossed to find Ben who shot to extend the Lions lead to 5-1.
Charlie once again fired a great cross to Rob in the bottom left hand corner of the pitch, cutting inside he beat a defender, his shot beat the keeper but not the last defender who cleared off the line. Adam picked up the rebound but the same defender cleared his shot as well only to see the ball reach Jadon whose shot was also unbelievably cleared by the same defender. Ben went close with a floated free kick before Rob collecting the ball in midfield beat two defenders creating space to shoot and score, 6-1. PG hit the bar from a free kick with the rebound collected on the line by Sam. Lions quickly broke and Jadon scored to extend Lions lead again.
A final dangerous corner saw PG once again hit the bar with last move of the match. 7-1 probably flatters Lions but they deserved the win and were clinical in the second half.
Rob was MOM for a great all round display, committed, brave and skilful.

Not to be out done the Lions second team recorded a big win of their own against a PG team who used many of their players from the first match making the Lions victory all the more impressive.
The match started evenly before with both teams sizing each other up. We didn't have to wait too long though before Ben set off on one of his runs down the wing (a feat he would be to repeat many times during the match). He shot from wide and hit the post.
Not long afterwards Ben went on another run and this time his shot was parried by the keeper but turned over the line by Liam following through from midfield. A Mattie corner was met by Ben, his first shot blocked, his second not, 2-0.
It wasn't all one way, Charlie in goal was called upon to make a couple of decent saves from long range shots. The next goal came from another Ben cross which was met by a crisp volley from Mattie, 3-0. The Lions midfield trio of Mattie, Tom and Sam were running the game by now, Liam was linking well with Ben and Josh in defence was also having a good game. A trademark long throw in from Mattie was flicked on by Sam for the fourth goal, and the fifth came from a cruel deflection by a PG defender following a shot from Ben.
The second half saw more good attacking moves from the Lions and the sixth came as Mattie broke through from midfield and passed the ball to Ben whose shot found the net. The seventh and last was another great goal, Liam ran through the midfield and defence and made and inch perfect pass to Ben who shot high into the net.
This was a really good victory for the Lions and they played some intelligent football.
Mattie was MOM with a commanding midfield performance that set the pace of the game. Report by Peter Deane

Lions recorded their narrowest victory of the season against a well organised Hurst side.
The match was technically an away match but had been switched to Lower Beeding due to no pitch availability.
Lions though struggled to make home advantage pay, they seemed sluggish.
Many of the boys had a busy sporting week, with talk of cross country, football tournaments and training in awful conditions the night before.
In homage to a 70's style of preparation the Ordever twins had hosted a Sports Relief Bender, staying up until 10.30 and gorging on potato variant snacks and fizzy drinks.
Maybe there was an air of complacency amongst the team after their superb victory the previous week. Despite their sluggishness Lions had all the early play. Rob running across the area had a good shot well saved. Lions forced two corners in quick succession with Jadon going very close from the second. Another long range curler from Rob just missed the right post with the keeper saving once again. From now though Hurst were getting into the game and holding their own in midfield.
Hamish aimed a great clearance to Adam on the right wing, beating his marker he crossed perfectly into the penalty area and the advancing run of Ben. Showing great technique Ben hit a first time volley that flew just over the bar. It was the move of the match and if Ben had scored would have been a contender for Lions goal of the season.
Another good run from Rob saw him cross from the left with Adam just failing to score.
Like last week the opposition goalkeeper was having a great game making another good save from Rob.
Charlie, Marcus and Jadon were being made to work hard in midfield as Hurst built moves on their own. Hamish was playing a blinder at the back protecting Sam in goal from having much to do.
The half ended with another Run from Rob, crossing into the area he found Marcus who couldn't quite get the ball out from under his feet to get a shot on target. Early in the second half a poor goal kick from the keeper was collected by Adam, central in midfield he ran the ball before shooting low towards the left corner but once again the goal keeper made a great save to keep the scores level.
From the resulting corner Lions nearly scored again but also once again were foiled by the keeper. However, it wasn't long before Lions managed to break the deadlock.
A long range volley / pass was lofted cleverly into the penalty area by Ben, the keeper lost the ball for the first time in the match as it dropped out of his hands and into the net, 1-0 to Lions.
The match remained tight and Lions knew they were in a game, they tried to extend their lead with another couple of good saves from Rob by the keeper, but were unable to do so.
Towards the end Hurst nearly equalised as their striker managed to break free of the Lions defence for the first time in the match. Shooting back across the face of the goal the ball went narrowly wide. It ended 1-0 and whilst it had been a tight match on the balance of chances this didn't flatter the Lions.
Hamish was Man of the Match for an intelligent display of sweeping. Match 2 - Lower Beeding Lions 1 - Hurstpierpoint 3

Goal Scorer - Liam Healy
Man of the Match - Tom Gibbs
The Lions second team lost their first match in a long time, although it has to be noted that Hurst used a number of players from the first match which made their task all the harder.
Because of this, Hurst dominated the early stages of the game, creating a couple of chances, forcing Sam into having to make saves. Despite this it was Lions who took the lead.
Ben coming in from the left wing set off on a weaving run through the Hurst midfield and defence, his shot saved by the keeper rebounded to Sam whose shot was also saved, the ball found it's way to Liam who slotted it home to give Lions the lead.
Lions went close again through an effort from Tom Gibbs that went just wide. Hurst equalised when Josh was caught wanting too long on the ball, the Hurst striker was now clean through and scored to level the match. Although level, Hurst were now well in control.
This pattern continued throughout the second half with Hurst constantly pressing, Lions were struggling to cope with the Hurst No. 6 through whom all of their play was coming. Another good move from Hurst extended their lead to 2-1 and they nearly scored again just skimming the post. It was left once again to the Hurst No. 6 to break free and give them a 3-1 lead, by now Lions were being carved open and were pleased to hear the final whistle.
Man of the Match went to Tom Gibbs for a battling performance in midfield.

The return match against the only team to have taken points off the Lions this season had been eagerly anticipated. The away fixture, a few weeks ago was a thrilling 0-0 draw and Copthorne had shown themselves to be the best team the Lions had faced this term. With five games left to play after this, talk was already in the air of a title decider.
Lions started well and, although without Adam (who was being chauffeured to the match by Sam J's Dad, flat battery long story) were shaping up well. Forcing their game on Copthorne they had all the early pressure, Ben went close with a long range effort that was well saved by the Goalkeeper. It wasn't long before Lions broke the deadlock with a great passing move.
Rob in midfield passed the ball to Charlie whose pass to Ben was inch perfect allowing him to take the ball in his stride and fire a long range shot to give Lions a 1-0 lead. Lions were now forcing the game but at times were committing too many players forward and getting overrun in midfield as Copthorne counter attacked. Hamish at the back though was having an excellent game and timed every interception to perfection. Lions had a series of close efforts, Ben nearly doubled the lead and a goal mouth scramble ended with the superb Copthorne keeper grabbing the ball to safety through a mêlée of boots. Lions scored their second through a midfield pass from Marcus to Ben who shot home, 2-0. By now Adam's Chauffer had arrived and joining the action he scored a trademark poachers goal from close range.
The second half followed the same pattern, more Lions pressure and chances and great defending to protect Sam who didn't have a serious shot to save all game.
Their fourth and final goal came from a series of sustained pressure. Lions were camped in the penalty area and shot after shot was being deflected off a defender but still they pressed until a shot by Ben was glanced over the bar by a desperate defenders header. From the corner Jadon stole in at the back post, 4-0.
Lions thoroughly deserved this victory against, still probably, the best side they have played all season. They suffocated Copthorne, not allowing them to play and created chance after chance of their own, it was only the brilliance of the keeper that kept the goal count to four. Ben Caidan was MOM with a sparkling return to the squad.

By the end this was a thriller but Lions didn't show up in the first half, they went 2-0 down from breakaway goals but it could have been more. Coach Craig set about earning his money through a half time pep talk and a number of tactical changes.
Sam Pickles was moved back from his lone striking role to strengthen defence and Ben was moved up front on his own. The changes worked, Lions were a much more solid proposition the second half and better able to deal with Copthorne attacks they were still facing.
Ben scored his first goal to cut the deficit with a run from midfield ending in a close range shot. He nearly added a second soon after but this time his shot bounced off the keepers knees to safety. The game was opening up and the next goal either way would prove decisive.
Adam in goal by now made some good (though at times unorthodox) saves. With momentum behind them it was Lions who scored near the end of the game to rescue a draw.
Lions showed real character during the second half and kept believing they could get a result from the game.
Sam Jewell earnt Man of the Match in defence,as not much got past him!

A momentous occasion as LB Lions under 10's played their first 11 a side match on a full sized pitch at Cowfold against their older club colleagues.
Pride was at stake and the under 11's were in no mood to give their younger upstarts any favours.
The under 10's lined up for kick off in an unfamiliar formation of 1, 5, 4 and seemed, from the touchline at least, a very long distance from each other.
As the match started many of the under 10's seemed in awe of the size of the pitch and their opponents.
A style of play honed for 7 a side football was quickly found wanting in the larger format of the game.
Adam who has so successfully spent the whole season goal hanging had to cope with the offside rule, a task beyond even most premiership footballers (esp. Robbie Keane).
Hamish's role as deep sweeper was at times getting in the way of Sam in goal. All players gradually began to adapt as the game wore on but not before the under 11's quickly took a 2-0 lead.
Charlie and Marcus, though in midfield, were well up for the challenge and gradually as the half wore on, Lions U10's began to gain some possession and create chances of their own. These were limited to long range shots which weren't yet troubling the keeper and Sam was being called into action to make some great saves to keep the score 2-0 at half time.
The under 10's started the second half brightly and through a combination of passing movements between Rob and Adam and long through ball from Charlie, Marcus and Jadon they created some real chances of their own.
It was the under 11's though who scored next with a long range high effort which Sam saved initially but couldn't stop rolling over the line. This seemed to inspire rather than dishearten the U10's and they had their best spell of the game camping inside the under 11's half. This brought reward as Rob broke through from midfield, reaching the edge of the penalty area and faced by three defenders he threaded a ball through to Adam who scored with a shot high into the net. This gave the under 10's even more confidence and they looked capable of scoring again soon. Rob broke through into the penalty area but panicking as set himself up he pulled his shot wide of the post, Charlie and Hamish both had long range efforts that went close.
The under 11's were rattled but responded well themselves with two quick goals to effectively kill the game off . The under 10's kept playing their football though and long ball through from Mattie C was met by Rob's run. Holding off two defenders he kept his cool this time and slotted the ball home to make the final score 5-2.
The under 11's deserved their win but there was stages in the match when they got a fright. The under 10's matched their opponents for skill but couldn't match them for size and experience of playing full sized football.
Both sides pride should remain intact and they will both, for different reasons take something positive from the game. All fourteen players used made a positive contribution to the match but Charlie was deserved winner of the under 10's Man of the Match, playing up two years and you'd never have known it.

With the home pitch under water from the deluge of rain we've suffered this week, the fixture was moved to K2 in an attempt to ease rapidly building fixture congestion.
For the first time in 3 months Coach Robinson had a full squad to pick and he elected to play with rolling subs giving everybody the same time on the pitch. The only player not substituted was Sam Jewell in goal but he had less to do than the subs (at least they were collecting the ball when it went off).
The match started scrappily being played in the S&S half but both teams were struggling with the speed of the surface. It was left to Charlie to break the deadlock with a well taken dipping volley from the edge of the area. Shortly afterwards Rob hit a long range shot which the keeper could only deflect into the path of Adam who scored to make it 2-0. Rob picked up the ball in midfield passing to Adam on the right wing, beating two players he found Rob on the edge of the area and his shot went high into the net, 3-0.
By now Lions were well on top with Jadon, Charlie and Marcus running midfield, Hamish sweeping everything that slipped through and Ben, Rob and Adam creating countless chances. Rob crashed a long range shot against the bar and Marcus hit the post twice in quick succession. A wayward throw in from S&S was collected by Rob, an early pass found Adam and he scored to make it 4-0. A great long range high shot from Ben was stopped by the keeper but Rob collected the rebound to make it 5-0.
Just before half time another long range effort (this time from Jadon) was stopped by the keeper but pounced on by Adam to give him a first half hat trick and Lions a 6-0 lead.
Storrington were making things more awkward for Lions in the second half but it wasn't long before they extended their lead again. A pinpoint cross filed pass from Ben found Rob on the right wing, going past the defence his cross / shot escaped everybody and found the back of the net. Lions forced further saves from the keeper and were dominating possession. A throw in was collected by Rob whose turn and left footed shot made the lead 9-0. Rob scored another from the right wing 9-0. The scoring was rounded off with a great move. Ben and Charlie interchanged passes to carve open the defence, Ben's cross was headed by Marcus and stayed in the air through a series of headers before Adam headed in, to make the final score 10-0.

Another full squad for the second match and they responded with their own emphatic performance which was every bit as convincing as the first.
Again it took a while for Lions to get to grips with the surface but when they did the goals began to flow. The first came courtesy of a goalies clearance controlled in midfield by Sam Jewell. Looking up he found Ben free on the wing with a well placed pass. Ben collected, turned and headed for goal keeping his composure to give Lions a 1-0 lead. Ben doubled the lead with a similar goal, this time collecting a long throw in from Mattie (Delap) C.
As in the first game, Lions were controlling midfield through Tom, Mattie D and Mattie C with Josh and Sam coping well with any attacks that got through. From the touchline Ben's Dad promised him £1 if he got a hat trick, so he did, this time benefiting from some midfield battling by Mattie C. Clean through on goal he finished with his trademark sliding shot (only advisable with track suit bottoms on astro turf).
Ben had more chances in the second half and increased his goal count to 4 with another free run on goal.
By now Lions were passing the ball well and finished the game in style with a good move rounded off by a curling shot from Sam, 5-0.

Five months into the season on a bitterly cold morning and with two of the first team squad unavailable, LB dropped their first points of the season against the best team they have played so far.
No bore draw this, it was an exciting match, the stiffest challenge LB have faced. Both sides had chances to win the game but a draw was the fairest result.
Copthorne started well and in early exchanges forced two good saves from Sam J. Jadon had to be at his best, and so he proved to be, frequently intercepting Copthorne's attacks with a with a reading of the game and a timing of his tackles beyond his early years.
Charlie too was performing heroics in a defensive midfield role and Marcus was turning defence into counter attack. Through one such move Adam broke free and fired a shot against the cross bar, the ball rebounded out to an advancing Ben O whose sliding shot just found the wrong side of the post.
LB were now gaining more of the ball but Copthorne were still dangerous on the break. Adam set off on a jinking run, breaking into the penalty area, reaching the touchline and crossing to find Rob whose looping shot once again hit the cross bar.
The second half saw more of the same. As the game stretched out chances were being created at both ends. Adam stopped the ball from going out with an acrobatic overhead kick that reached Charlie in the penalty are who just couldn't apply the final touch to score. LB were exposed by a breakaway attack which found an unmarked forward in the penalty area, just when it looked as though he must score Sam J raced across his goal to scoop the ball out of air stopping it hit the back of the net.
These two good sides ended up cancelling each other out, the return match is eagerly anticipated. Finally the game was also notable for the fact that the Ordever brothers passed to each other!
Match 2 - Lower Beeding Lions 2 - Copthorne 1
Team - Charlie Robinson, Josh Wicking. Mattie Davis, Mattie Coates, Tom Gibbs, Sam Jewell, Adam Sowton, Subs; Robert Deane, Jadon Marone
MOM - Josh Wicking
Goal Scorers - Tom Gibbs, Jadon Marone
Another competitive, and closely fought game, ended in a narrow and just about deserved victory for LB.
If there is a Rory Delap of under 10's football then surely Mattie Coates has a strong claim. At times the penalty area seems to near for him, I fully expect him, fairly soon, to throw the ball, uncontested, from one side to the other. His Dad will have to start bringing towels to matches so he really does look the part. It was from one of his throw ins that LB took the lead, panic in the area ensued, a shot from Adam saved but was followed up clinically by Tom, 1-0.
Soon after Adam robbed a defender wanting too long on the ball, heading for goal his shot was ell saved. A long clearance from Charlie in goal was pounced on by Rob, tuning his market but under pressure from another defender his shot went narrowly over. Another run from Rob ended with a pass to Mattie C on the edge of the area and again the shot was just over.
Early in the second half, a well worked passing move between Mattie D, Jadon and Tom ended with a curling shot from Jadon to double the lead. Copthorne kept pressing and were rewarded with a goal through LB failing to clear the ball in their penalty area. The match remained tight but due, in no small part, to a great defensive performance by Josh, LB protected their lead to the final whistle.

First Match - Lower Beeding Lions 5 - Royal United 3
Man of the match Adam Sowton
Goalscorers - Adam Sowton 3, Ben Ordever 1, Jadon Morrone 1
Team: Hamish Waller (Captain), Jadon Morrone, Mattie Coates, Ben Ordever, Marcus Ordever, Charlie Robinson
Finally, after almost two months of snow, ice and rain the heavens cleared and the sun came out to allow the Lions their first game of 2010.
With Deano still out with injury and Ben Caidan forced to sit out ahead of his Brighton commitment against the mighty QPR on Sunday, the team was led by novice captain Hamish Waller.
Sam Jewell had woken with a fever and had to pull out but we were lucky enough to have Ben Ordever on hand to take-on the keeper's jersey.
The match started with the Lions showing uncharacteristically early form with our first chance on goal coming within the first minute, Adam's shot whistling past the right post after a lovely move started by Marcus with support from Jadon.
We had barely caught our breath when Adam scored our first after connecting with a fabulous long ball in from deep in our own half from the already irrepressible Marcus. The fast pace of the game meant we were still grinning like Cheshire cats when Royal equalised despite Ben Ordever's valiant efforts. However, it was clear the Lions were on top form and the chances kept coming. Moments later Mattie struck a beautifully weighted corner that Adam volleyed in with his left foot to put us ahead 2-1.
Again Royal came back at us and Hamish's attempted clearance bounced cruelly off the oncoming Royal captain and Ben Ordever was beaten by a great shot 2-2. This seemed to galvanise the Lions still further and Jadon fought bravely in Royal's penalty area to make it 3-2 to the Lions.
Hamish brought the first half to an end by narrowly missing the top right corner with a long range shot.
The second half started as the first half had ended with the Lions in possession. However, pride, as they say, comes before a fall and we conceded the softest of goals despite having 6 Lions in the area 3-3. We came back with Hamish finding Adam whose flick-on found Marcus who scored to make it 4-3.
Charlie had been battling hard all game but suffered an injury as he stopped Royal in midfield yet again. Liam came on to relieve Charlie while he received emergency treatment. A huge throw from Mattie into the six yard box found Adam who scored with a right footed half volley for his well-deserved hat trick and make it 5-3. With Charlie now back on and controlling the midfield once again the Lions enjoyed another spell of domination including a sweet pass from Adam which set Hamish free on the halfway line for a solo run at goal. Sadly one touch too many and the Royal keeper put an end to that dream.
Although we secured a great result the Royal's dangerous duo (numbers 4 and 17) were a constant threat. Overall an excellent performance from every member of the team. We're back and roaring!

Second Match - Lower Beeding Lions 0 - Royal United 0
The management sent out a positive formation: Charlie in goal marshalling a defence of Tom and Josh, with Matty D and Liam in midfield, and Sam P and Ben upfront.
The boys managed to counteract the Royals throughout the first half, with a couple of great through balls from Liam.
In defence Josh was reliable in clearing their long balls and Charlie tipped a thunderstrike onto the bar.
Tom began to make forward runs to good effect, ably backed up by Matty.
There was tireless and intricate play in the box between Ben, Liam and Sam.
The second half continued in the same vein, punctuated by a coupleof super stops from Charlie.
Marcus and Adam joined the fray, but it still ended a very respectable 0-0.
End.

Goal scorers -
Marcus x 2, Adam, Josh, Finn
For a match played in about 6 inches of mud, this was a remarkably pulsating encounter, right down to the dramatic finale.
There was some really good football from both teams despite the conditions and a dramatic and successful fight back from our squad.
Finn had looked a bit ropey before kick-off and needed a little attention so missed the first few minutes but soon rose Lazarus like and terrorised the Hurst defence for the next 40 minutes.
We welcomed Ellie back into the team and she was solid in defence making a great partnership with Elliot.
Dan continued to cope manfully in goal (although his mum wasn't too pleased with the state of his kit) Hurst are a good team and took the early advantage. It was very even but we were again undone by pace early on and Hurst were 3 -1 up at half-time, with only Marcus exceptional run and strike keeping us in the game.
The coach has made me mention his rousing half-time talk which did seem to have an effect as we emerged fired up and piled on the pressure.
Plenty of goalmouth scrambling ensued but it was all Lions as we managed to score 3, taking the lead with strikes from Josh and Adam and another for Marcus.
The momentum was all with us but somehow Hurst clawed their way back into the game and to the ecstasy of the home fans, fired in the equaliser with a few minutes on the clock. That set up the tense finish which was settled when Finn, who'd not made the most of his chances up to that point, scored a cracker from distance.
A grandstand finish with our team showing great fight right to the end. Man of the Match: Josh Barnett

If you've seen those adverts on Sky's Saturday morning football show (if you haven't they involve a bunch of people falling down in mud) then you've got the basic idea for the second match.
The pitch was now cut up horribly and our natural passing game was somewhat inhibited.
The boys and girl were also completely exhausted having trudged around for 80 minutes so there was no disgrace in the result which was a bit of a lottery by this stage.

Lower Beeding Lions 4 - TD Shipley 0
Goals - Finn, Marcus 2, Charlie
We were able to field a full strength side for only the second time this season and as at Roffey earlier in the season, the team were superb against a high flying and well organised TD Shipley side.
An early piece of bad luck for TD when their number 9 who was a bit in the wars throughout the game had a c lash of heads with Josh ,the referee rightly blew straight away but a second before a TD player had whacked a great shot into the goal.
Soon after this, Lions went ahead and didn't look back.
Finn, having an influential first half broke the TD Shipley defence and finished well.
Lions then started passing the ball around with confidence and ability with passing across the pitch and great supporting movement from particularly Finn, Ben, Marcus and Charlie.
Adam and Josh were reading the game brilliantly and sweeping everything up, Dan was largely a spectator. The next three goals were all the result of sweeping, incisive moves with Marcus bagging a couple and Charlie with a trademark ghost in at the far post.
The second half was always going to be a tighter affair. Re-organising by TD confused us until Charlie tightened up on their number 14.
TD competed harder in the second half and we went a bit flat, with Finn struggling after an accidental kick on his ankle.
Occasional scintilating moves, such as a solo run from Marcus a stunning running volley from Finn, and run and cross shot from Ben, resulted in good stops from their keeper whilst TD started stringing some moves together and found Dan in increasingly good form in goal.
We certainly looked very strong both technically and physically today.
TD felt they were on the rough end of one or two decisions but we certainly won well against a good side and our players should be very pleased with their efforts.

Match 1 - Lower Beeding Lions 2 -
Kirdford 9
Goal scorers - Marcus Phillips, Finn Aldrich We were looking to do the double against Kirdford having managed to beat them on their own ground earlier in the season.
It wasn't to be though, they are an excellent side and had us fairly bewildered by the end of the match.
A number of their squad just had too much pace and a number of our boys had a bit of an off day.
It could have been very different though and we held our own in the first half and probably should have been ahead at the break.
Kirdford opened the scoring but Marcus wriggled through their defence to level things up.
We then had a series of glorious chances that on any other day would have been buried but our strike force just couldn't find the net.
If we'd taken a couple of those, the day could have ended very differently. As it was, Kirdford scored a couple with rapid counter-attacks and while we pulled one back with some great interchange between Adam and Finn which Finn finished off, we were 4-2 down at the break despite it being a very even contest up til then.
The second half was a bit of a blur 5 unanswered goals, most of them the result of the Kirdford attackers legging it straight through our defence plus a couple of well taken headers which you don't see much of at this age.

Match 2 Lower Beeding Lions 0 - Kirdford 1
A much closer and competitive encounter this one with the Lions going desperately close to finding an opening on numerous occasions.
Having found the net so successfully last week, Elliot was not to be drawn away from oppositions goal line and was arguably a little too advanced even for a player of his striker's instincts.
Dan was denied by a headed clearance and at the death, Kirdford nicked one to take all the points.
A fairly tough morning for the boys all round.

Match 1 - Lower Beeding Lions 5 - 2 East Grinstead
Goal scorers - Finn x 4, Adam
Another great performance from the Under 9s against a team who beat us pretty convincingly last year.
The final score line suggests we had it all our own way but it took a while for the Lions to establish superiority and the first 10 minutes was very even. Dan was forced into two excellent saves as the visitors built some good pressure.
The momentum turned as the Lions started to pass the ball well and there was a sign of things to come when Finn hit the post from distance. The deadlock was broken as a slick series of passes from Marcus and Finn found Adam at the far post for a neat finish. Finn consolidated the lead with a strike from distance after more good work from Marcus
The second half saw the visitors pile on the pressure early on and they were rewarded with a goal that reduced the deficit to just one. A few nervous minutes followed but our fears were relieved as Finn skipped through the opposition defence and clipped the ball into the net. Finn then repeated his trick of a few weeks back and got one to sneak in from a corner to complete his hat-trick and there was one more to come as another fine delivery from Marcus allowed Finn to bag his fourth.
The final goal of the match went to the visitors as a shocking (or possibly completely justified I couldn't see) penalty decision went against us and Dan had no chance of keeping out a well struck spot-kick. But the 5-2 final scoreline was justified given the Lions' dominance for long spells a really good performance with some excellent football and great teamwork.

Match 2 Lower Beeding Lions 5 - 0 East Grinstead
Goal scorers - Elliot x 4, Adam Football is a team game and we should give credit to all of the boys for another dominant display in the second match of the morning. But one player grabbed all the headlines here Elliot Powell with four goals (quite an expensive morning for his mother this one) all taken with a deadly poachers instinct.
Adam was able to grab one in amongst the frenzy and Will, Dan, Harry and Finn all went close but Elliot walked off with the plaudits.
A good morning all round for the Under9s, good football played in both games leading to two deserved wins.

Match 1 - Lower Beeding Lions 3 - Hurstpierpoint 1
Goals - Adam, Marcus,Finn
No snow, hail, torrential rain, but a gusty wind kept the players on their toes. One thing you need to do at K2 is not be distracted by the environment.
The Lions first goal saw Adam launching a long range effort into the empty Hurst goal. The reason why it was empty was Hurst disobeying first rule of K2....... play your own ball. The Hurst keeper was merrily passing a stray ball back to its owners whilst the game went on without him. Very fortunate for the Lions.
Hurst equalised and were generally a much improved side from last season, pressing us hard and not allowing our strikers time on the ball.
But then second rule of K2 came into play. There are landfill sites in Russia that have less litter than K2. Do not stop to pick it up. 2-1 Marcus ever the opportunist had cleverly lobbed the ball into an empty goal.
Hurst continued to press but were suckered into a counter attacking situation. Finn who had been frustrated all morning, finally got in a 1v1 situation on the half way line and after a typical run, finished with confidence.
Dan was excellent in goal, Josh was everywhere and Adam won a lot of ball (I can't help making rugby references when mentioining Adam).
A scruffy victory and we struggled to play with any fluency against enthusiastic opponents who will play worse and win on other days.
Match 2 - Lower Beeding Lions 1 - Hurstpierpoint 3
Scorer - Will
Hurst had more luck in this game and deservedly won 3-1. Our performance was notable for a good performance from James who added psssing to his stoical defensive qualities. Will had a run out upfront and nearly scored and then did score with a corner that had the slightest of right angled deflections.
Let's hope we get to play on grass soon as we are getting really tired of the narrow pitch and the ball zipping off the astro.football but not as we know it!

Match 1 - Lower Beeding Lions 2 - Ockley Acorns 2
Team Dan, Will (Elliot), Adam, Josh, Harry, Finn, Marcus
Goals - Finn, Own Goal Last September, we invited Ockley for a kickabout in our backyard and they spanked us nine to nothing. Not very friendly for the first game of the season. So off we troop to their home turf in truly Baltic conditions filled with some trepidation.
The result showed that we have come an awfully long way this season. A sensational performance from our boys in a game of genuine quality saw us steal a point against really tough opposition.
The home side took the lead as some sleepy (or possibly frozen) defending gave the advancing Ockley attack too much time to line up the shot and fire it home. The home side piled on the pressure and were two up before long, as again our defending showed signs of creaking under the strain. Concern mounted that we were about to take another pasting from the talented Ockley squad but we were given hope before half time as Harry battled away in midfield (I've written that before I'm sure) to release Finn who stormed through and made no mistake with his finish.
The goal just before half time gave us real momentum and we were the better side in the second half. Adam was sensational in midfield full of running and playing quality football and Josh and Elliot produced a much more solid second half display. Marcus and Finn created some good chances and we finally drew level through an unfortunate Ockley own goal. We tried (and failed) not to celebrate too loudly.
It all got a bit desperate towards the end but some fine saves from Dan and manful defending from the whole team saw us home for a fine draw.

Another very tight encounter which could have gone either way. We were robbed with pretty much the last kick of the game as the home side nicked the win but had held out magnificently prior to that. By the time we kicked off your reported was almost frozen solid so notes are scarce but I do remember Adam giving in a display of almost demonic energy and Elliot and James putting in a really solid performance in defence.
Overall, this was a really satisfying morning. For me, the performance of the season.

A good cranleigh side exploited some extreme doziness in the lions and the score could have been higher.
We started competing well at 2-0 down only to fall foul of a cruelly deflected goal which knocked our confidence again.
At least 3 of the goals were by our own hand but that was a reflection of the play. We were second to the ball and slow in decision making against a hard pressing physical side. We had a couple of efforts and tried hard but we'll put this down to the novelty of playing on grass!
A strange performance this not helped by having only 5 players at the due start time.

Goal scorers - Finn x 4, Marcus, Adam, Josh
Team - Will, Dan, Adam, Josh, Harry (Elliot), Finn, Marcus
People who get paid to kick a football about are constantly whinging about having to play too much football and begging for a longer lay-off over Christmas. On the evidence of this game I'd suggest we reject such pleadings as our boys returned to the fray looking a little the worse for wear after their extended snow enforced break.
So we had an edgy start with neither team imposing itself and struggling to string passes together.
Will had been selected to take the gloves and was forced to make a couple of good saves early on as Henfield tested him from distance.
The deadlock was broken after 10 minutes with a truly historic goal. For 3 years now Finn has been attempting to score from corners and today he finally proved his doubters wrong with one that wriggled through. It looked like LBL would run away with it after that, as we piled the pressure on.
Marcus denied only by the upright , but we actually went behind after failure to clear, cost us one goal and a classic piece of counter-attacking from Henfield another. So at half-time, we weren't looking too clever.
The K2 pitch has a slight slope and we were downhill in the second half. Not sure if it that was a contributing factor or if some tactical magic had been weaved but we were transformed in the second half scoring 6 goals without reply.
Marcus got us back on level terms and Josh gave us the lead. Three goals from Finn and one from Adam completed the rout and by the end it all looked pretty straightforward.
So just half a game of football to shake of the Christmas hangover and if we can repeat our second half performance every week we'll never lose!

Match 2 - Lower Beeding Lions1 (Dan) - Henfield 1
Team - Marcus (Josh), James, Perry, Elliot, Lewis (Dan), Will (Finn), Adam (Harry)
A rather less fluid encounter this one and the chill had set in by now so memories are few. The first half was goalless as the two midfield units scrapped it out. Will had a couple of good chances and was unlucky not to find the net.
A few changes at half time added some urgency to our play and we took the lead after Harry had battled well in midfield and released Dan up the left who bore down on goal and slapped the ball into the top left corner.
A few more chances went begging with Elliot at the centre of things but shortly before the end Henfield found an equaliser and a draw was probably a fair result.
